I ♥ Bit Torrent (December 2004

Man, I love Bit Torrent. How else could I keep up on not only Battlestar Galactica, but Drawn Together as well?...

I don't think it's wrong to want these sunglasses. In prescription, of course....
·
Wow. (June 2004
)
This CG movie is really, freakishly well done. The blurb says it was rendered on an Athlon 1.4Ghz machine... but what's really amazing about it is the realism and expressions (even if there is a little Uncanny Valley action going on here)....

Securing Wireless (October 2003
)
CommsDesign - Securing Wireless Links: Part 1 ...since I have a wireless router and PC card sitting on the floor next to me here at work. (hint: Staples has a GREAT deal on a D-Link DI-614+ wireless router. $69 after mail-in rebate ($89 regular price... which beats London Drugs' price of $159 on the same model) (Incidentally, there may just be an open access point near my house.) Update: It turns out there is a wireless access point near me - probably right next door, given the strength of the signal. However, the people have done their homework, and have encrypted the connection. My own wireless router broadcasts from upstairs to the main floor quite nicely, with a clear, strong signal. It was nifty sitting on the couch watching TV while surfing. My inner geek was quite peaceful....

Argh. I've had enough of the damned comment spammers on this site. As a result, I've removed HTML from comments, and and URL field from the comments page....

A question... (October 2003
)
So here's a question for you folks... Kirsten needs to replace the network card on her laptop, because the stupid dongle thing is doing what all stupid dongle things do, and is slowly breaking. So, do we get her another network card for $50 (linksys has a nic without the dongle), or do we spend an extra $100 or so and go wireless? The actual network card is around the same price as a wired one, but we'd have to get a wireless router and hook my machines up to it. The computer room is eventually going to end up in the basement, but I have to remodel a room down there to accomodate it first (it's currently a carpeted bedroom). Until we get around to doing that, we're going to toss the computers upstairs in the spare bedroom....

Music copying legal in Canada? (September 2003
)
This article suggests that the levies on blank media makes copying music legal in Canada. The argument in the article is shaky for legally using P2P services like Kazaa and Gnutella to share files... but does lend much credence to having MP3s of your own music. On the other hand, those same levies have generated some 70 million dollars of revenue for he music industry in Canada. So you could say that the music you download is already paid for....

Ernie Ball has, well... (August 2003
)
Sterling Ball got rid of all the Microsoft products in his business. Why? Because the Microsoft-supported BSA raided and sued his business for having software sitting unused on hand-me-down PCs in his clerical department. After settling for $100,000, and having the BSA drag their business' name through the press, he vowed to never use a Microsoft product again. Ball claims that he "saved $80,000 right away by going to open source" and has been able to inexpensively run thin clients in his company. Productivity has gone way up, because only needed programs are installed: "For somebody whose job is filling forms all day, invoicing and exporting, why do they need a Web browser?"...

not that bad... (June 2003
)
According to Bill Gates, Big Brother isn't all that bad. Comforting words from the chief architect of a company currently working on Operating System stuffed to the gills with 'digital rights management' software. Why do I get the feeling that the phrase, "Orwell's vision didn't come true, and I don't believe it will" will be just as accurate a statement as "640k should be enough for anybody"?...

the (male) pill (November 2002
)
By 2005, a male birth control pill should be available - this should come as a welcome option to men and women alike, in monogamous relationships. The pill essentially reduces the sperm count to zero, with no noticable side effects aside from slight weight gain (in comparison, there are several more side effects in existing birth control pills for women). In clinical trials, all participants' sperm counts dropped to zero. And, according to the researchers, "any breathing male is a candidate."...

all the fun of 1970s computing, today! (October 2002
)
IBM has announced a brand new computing strategy, aimed at big business -- selling computing power in the same fashion as electrical power. Isn't this exactly how 'computer time' worked back in the days of the mainframe? Students were given computing credits for time on the mainframe - if you ran out of credits (you didn't), you were SOL for getting anything done... It's a great idea for businesses that occassionally need supercomuting power, but can't afford to keep a supercomputer on premises..... but it's not all that innovative or new an idea. ;)...

wow... (August 2002
)
They IBM PC was 21 years old yesterday. And if you read a little further down the page, the Ad-Lib sound card is 15 years old this month. The Ad-Lib was the first sound card availble to consumers, and did a bang-up job of making really poor sound. I picked one up with my 'new' computer (a 286/12!) and had it for the longest time (until I bought a used Sound Blaster card)....

yeesh! (June 2002
)
After not a small amount of shoving, I managed to wedge an 80GB hard drive in my home machine, along with a new case and a CD-RW/R/DVD drive... The case & CD-RW install went peachy and fast, but the HD took forever to install. It turns out the BIOS I had in this board didn't support higher than 32GB... so I ran through every K7M BIOS I could find... Eventually, I found a beta BIOS that seemed to do the trick -- a day later!...

Is VHS obsolete? - with my experience yesterday trying to find a VHS copy of The Matrix, I'd say yes, it is. Two of the stores I went into (London Drugs and Future Shop) didn't even carry VHS anymore. The rest carried VHS, but mostly on discount racks. I guess I could have seen this coming - I just didn't expect it quite so quickly....

Isn't that what a carnivore does? (May 2002
)
It seems that Carnivore isn't as selective as the FBI thinks... Carnivore is the FBI's email & web monitoring software, which the US Government is attempting to have installed on the mail servers of every ISP in America. It seems that instead of capturing data from a single, specified source, it has been capturing data from additional unauthorized sources. Of course, why they don't just tap into Echelon or Echelon 2 escapes me. (Aside from the fact they don't want to acknowledge the existence of Echelon/2, despite the plethora of evidence)...

Scientists unveil first global earthquake hazard map (April 2001

Scientists unveil first global earthquake hazard mapIt took more than 500 scientists and seven years of research, but the first global earthquake hazard map is now complete. How come it took seven whole years? Well, for starters, the scientists had to contend with forces much greater than earthquakes. Try politics....
