I just found out the other day that I'll be presenting a paper at SDH/SEMI's portion of Congress 2007, the annual gathering of academic societies in Canada. The proposal looked at community blogging and how that helps to shape individual identity. I'll be presenting some time between May 28th and 30th (the program has not yet been released) in glorious Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Since 6000 people are descending upon Saskatoon for Congress, we've already booked our room at the Hotel Senator. Our friend Stan is staying a couple of blocks away at the Delta Bessborough, but we decided it was far... |

Help me write my thesis
|
I've been lagging behind on my thesis production lately. I'm not entirely sure why, whether it's a fear of looking like an uneducated buffoon, impostor syndrome, anxiety, fatigue, or just plain laziness. Regardless of the cause, I'm dangerously close to missing my personal deadline for completion in the Spring (I need to have everything complete and in my supervisory committee's hands no later than about February 1). So here's the deal. I'll start posting snippets of the raw thesis material I've written over the week to the blog every Sunday night. If I miss a posting, I want you to... |

So it turns out there's a PhD position open in Bergen, Norway that would be just about perfect for the likes of me. It's in the field I'm doing (or not doing, as the case may currently be) research in, and I'd be working with a professor who's really making a name for herself in blog and hypertext research. Not only that, but it pays $45,000USD per year for a guaranteed four years. Yes, that's right - in Norway, they pay their PhD students. Of course, I'm not done my MA yet; part of the reason I'm considering applying for... |

What I have to do this weekend...
|
So, what I have to do this weekend (aside from finish working on the hell that is my Flash project) is play around in Neverwinter Nights and write a presentation on the NWN toolset. We get to use a secondary toolset called Scriptease, but I think just mastering the original toolset will be enough of a challenge! I'll also have to look for additional resources like landscapes and such to make my end project more interesting.... |

Thank you, QE II

I've decided to let Homer Simpson illustrate the news I was excited about yesterday, which turned out not to be a prank pulled on me by the universe. I've seen the letter, handed in the paperwork, and barring some sort of bureaucractic mixup, all is said and done. I was sitting at my desk at work, when an email from the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies arrived with the subject "award." I opened the email up, and the first thing I read was that I had been awarded the Province of Alberta Graduate Scholarship (now known as the Queen Elizabeth II... |

Last night, Kirsten and I went to Staples and made 1,848 copies on their photocopier, which took about an hour and a half. What is it we were spending so much paper on, you ask? We were making copies of the final version of Kirsten's PhD dissertation, Dark Sisters: Witches and Prophets in Early Modern England. Today was the day Kirsten had to hand in her thesis to her comittee, which meant burning the midnight oil last night to ensure all 7 copies were made. We also received word that her external comittee member, Marion Gibson was approved by the... |

I registered last night for my last set of MA courses; it looks like another interesting lineup (and should actually be useful for my MA): ENGL 695 - Posthumanism HuCo 616 - Multimedia for the Humanities HuCo 613 - Cyberspace and Networked Culture Should be an interesting term.... |

THE PAPER
|
So as many of you know, I've been writing my term paper for HuCo 510 over the last week. What many of you do not know is that it's turning into a bit of a monster, and will likely expand after-the-fact to be my MA thesis. I started out writing a paper on personal documentary on the web, in the form of weblogs, livejournals, vlogging, etc... As I started writing it, however, I realized that there's something very central to all of this personal documentary, and that's the confession. So I've been looking at everything I'm pulling in (sites like... |

Be vewwy vewwy quiet...
|
... I'm huntin' words. That's right, it's essay-writing season, and I have a heck of a lot of words to bag. So, aside from random mutterings and utterings, this site is going to go a little quiet for the next couple of weeks (though I reserve the right to write missives about anything ranging from Foucault and film theory to "hee hee hee, the light sure is shiny in this room"). I'll see you on the other side, folks... in the meantime, entertain yourself in the comments.... |

Short Attention Span Theatre

In other news, I finally have time to dedicate towards writing papers for class. I have two to write for one of my HuCo classes. One I've yet to narrow down to a specific topic, but last night - with Kirsten's help - I narrowed down the other paper (and presentation) to personal documentary on the Internet. It's an interesting area to look at, especially because there is so much disparity in how people are 'documenting' themselves on the 'net. I'm planning to spend most of my time focusing on video documentary, and plan to bring in some Foucault and... |

Something from HuCo
|
Over the past three weeks or so (much of that waiting to get some files from Britain), I've been working with some map data and data from Kirsten's witch manuscripts. Here's something that just came out of the data yesterday - these are witches in the county of Essex. Click on the image for a high-res version...... |
