When we first got to Halifax, Kirsten's car was on a train somewhere between Edmonton and Antigonish. In order to get to Antigonish ourselves, along with all of our luggage, we had to rent a car. I decided it would be best if we kept the rental car the entire time I was there, so Kirsten wouldn't have to spend 5 hours getting me to the airport and getting back when I left. I had reserved a mid-size car, knowing that we'd have a fair bit of luggage to haul up there. I had hoped we would get something decently...

Last night I picked up a pair of Samsung 940BW 19" widescreen LCDs. I'd held off purchasing LCD monitors for quite some time, but the two 17" monitors I was using at home finally started getting unbearably fuzzy and hard to view. K even agreed it was time to get new monitors, and when that happened I knew there was a problem! It feels weirdly luxurious to have the new monitors sitting on my desk. They take up far less space depth-wise on the desk than the CRTs did, which makes the desk look much larger than it actually is...

I grabbed Firefox 2.0, and I have to say, I'm impressed. There's not a whole lot of things changed in my daily use of the software, but what is changed in noticeable, such as the form-field spell-checking. K has bugged me for awhile about finding a way to build spell-checking into her course website, so no bad typos make their way on to her website. I'd been playing with some JavaScript solutions, as well as some browser extensions as a way of dealing with that, and now I don't have to rely on them anymore. I'll just install Firefox 2.0...

We are currently having our first snowfall of the year - pretty much right on schedule. I thought I felt snow on me when I woke up at 3am to let the dogs out, but was too tired to a) care, or b) turn on the outside lights to look. With any luck, it'll melt away as fast as it's coming, especially since I still need to put up the storm windows on the side of the house, and I should really get a last fertilizing of the lawn in before it's totally snow-covered. In other news, K and I...

An idea, free to anyone who has a better electronics background than me (read: any electronics background) to implement: Fans powered by a telephone jack. The idea came to me this morning, when I read that Los Angeles suffered power outages while temperatures were over 100° farenheit, and people were really suffering, but able to phone into the utilities companies to see what was going on. I then remembered that phone lines contain a small electrical charge, which lights up buttons on the phone, etc. It's not a heavy electrical charge, to be sure, but it should be enough to...

I've been sucked into the new Doctor Who, and I'm impressed with how good it's been so far. Russel T. Davies is doing a really good job of rebuilding the series. A larger arc seems to be emerging; one of the things that has been recurring in all the episodes is a reference to 'Bad Wolf.' It's everywhere, but the first nod in-series to it was this week, when the Doctor finally notices it (Sorry Canadian viewers, I'm two weeks ahead of you thanks to Torrents). There's a lot of speculation as to what it could be, and what it...

I think Rex Murphy put it best. ''Revenge of the Sith'', it's not a movie, it's a protracted lisp. He's a fan... he even wrote his reactions to Episode I: Star Wars is said to be the self-defining icon for a generation. Icon -- they got one syllable right --con. This is all fluff and feathers; "Skywalker" as panhandler for the disposable income of kids and boomer sentimentalists. Star Wars is not an event. The Phantom Menace -- it's phantom entertainment and menacing merchandising. Sleep overnight in a line-up to see Star Wars? It's a felony against good taste. May...

Kirsten came back from Banff a few weeks ago, with a suggestion for a burger she wanted to try. At the hotel she was staying at, they had a burger called the Avalanche Burger. It sounded good, but she didn't try it at the time. We've since made it a couple of times, and boy-howdy is it tasty. It's basically made like this: toast the buns, then on the bottom add a layer of tapenade. Place your patty on top of that, then place some goat feta on top of the patty. Garnish with spinach and tomato and serve. It's...

The general opinion of “Revenge of the Sith” seems to be that it marks a distinct improvement on the last two episodes, “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones.” True, but only in the same way that dying from natural causes is preferable to crucifixion. source And with that, my mind is set. I've decided to treat the "second trilogy" of Star Wars movies the same way I treat Highlander 2, 3, and 4: they don't exist in my universe....

I just got a call from Kirsten, who had taken Cayce to the vet this morning for an ear infection. It turns out Cayce is allergic to both corn and rice, the two main components of dog foods everywhere (including all the "Allergic" blends). According to our vet (Edmonton Holistic Veterinary Clinic - yes, you read that right, our vet is basically a pet naturopath), Cayce has the classic symptoms of a rice/corn allergy: she licks her paws almost obsessively, and gets ear infections at 2 month intervals. It turns out that in humans, rice is a completely hypoallergenic food,...

Every once in awhile, we give Cayce a bone to chew on. We get them for free from the local bison store, and they always put lots of meat on their dog bones. Cayce will chew on it for awhile, and eventually want to bury it. This is great for her in the summer, as she can take it outside, but in the winter she has to use other methods... They know the Disney cast members, they notice if a new speaker is placed on a ride, or plants are placed around a fountain. They have memorized the entire history of every square foot of the park. Are these people mentally unhealthy, or do they just really like Disneyland? In one Disneyphile's case, a traumatic event is associated with Disneyland: his father had a heart...

Seriously. Who didn't see this coming? The US is in a bad way with regards to the situation in Iraq. What better timing for a great piece of anti-Iraq propaganda about their 'star soldier', Jessica Lynch? Yes, I'm sure that they'll protray the Iraqi doctor that helped her in a positive light, since it's told from his perspective... but just watch what they do with the initial 'battle' and subsequent dealings with Iraqi soldiers. The funniest thing about this, however, is that they've cast a Canadian actress to play Jessica Lynch....
