· 1000 blank white cards (April 2005 )
I need to find a few people to play 1000 Blank White Cards with me. It sounds like a real hoot! (A bunch of sample cards can be had here (hit refresh)...
· Some movies I liked (April 2005 )
I saw me some movies.
· Soliloquouy against suburbanism (April 2005 )
What I want may very well be impossible....
· Satan in a packet (March 2005 )
I'm eating Easy Mac for lunch today, because we really didn't have any leftovers from dinner last night. Watching this stuff change from watery soup to non-watery mac & cheese is really quite frightening. I'm pretty sure that Satan is somehow involved in the process....
· Argh. (March 2005 )
Argh. Linux box died the other day... looks like it's finally time to replace the case/power supply. :(...
· Christobel! (March 2005 )
I must own these....
· I thought (March 2005 )
I thought I lost my shoe. But it was only under my desk....
· Discuss. (March 2005 )
Home renovations. Discuss....
· Peter Jennings Reports (February 2005 )
Did anyone else catch Peter Jennings Reports last night? Did it seem odd to you that a fairly well-known and respected journalist would report on the UFO phenomenon?...
· Film recommendation (February 2005 )
Also, I highly, highly recommend The Life Aquatic. Watched it over the weekend, and it was fantastically good. Bill Murray is turning out to be a better and better actor every time I see him....
· We have an allergic dog... (February 2005 )
I just got a call from Kirsten, who had taken Cayce to the vet this morning for an ear infection. It turns out Cayce is allergic to both corn and rice, the two main components of dog foods everywhere (including all the "Allergic" blends). According to our vet (Edmonton Holistic Veterinary Clinic - yes, you read that right, our vet is basically a pet naturopath), Cayce has the classic symptoms of a rice/corn allergy: she licks her paws almost obsessively, and gets ear infections at 2 month intervals. It turns out that in humans, rice is a completely hypoallergenic food, suitable for anyone with any sort of allergy to eat. It was assumed that this was the same for dogs, but it turns out that this is not the case. So, we're going to have to get her a special dog food, made by a company called Natura, which has no grains in it. And we're going to have to be careful when we're giving her scraps that there's no corn or rice in them....
· Happy Anniversary! (February 2005 )
I'm coming out of hiding for only a minute... to say Happy Anniversary to Nat & Del!...
· Hellboy II (January 2005 )
Rumour is that Hellboy II is being produced as we speak... little do they know that I happen to have a copy of it sitting on my coffee table at home, courtesy of a trip Kirsten's mom took to Hong Kong... I still haven't seen it, because I wanted to watch Hellboy I first, so as not to lose any of the story. :) Update: OH. MY. GOD. It turned out to be a movie called Skinned Deep, which is quite possibly the worst movie ever to stain celluloid. It's bereft of plot or action, and is quite possibly the least scary horror movie I've ever seen (and I sat through Coven). If you see this movie, throw holy water on it, stab the video clerk, and burn down the store, then burn your clothing and bathe yourself in lye. It's just that bad....
· That's a lot of space... (January 2005 )
I think it's time I rebuilt my Linux development box... apparently there's 2.28PB of free space. That's 2.28 petabytes, my friends, or 2,334.7 terabytes....
· Cutest. Puppy. Ever. (December 2004 )
Every once in awhile, we give Cayce a bone to chew on. We get them for free from the local bison store, and they always put lots of meat on their dog bones. Cayce will chew on it for awhile, and eventually want to bury it. This is great for her in the summer, as she can take it outside, but in the winter she has to use other methods... (click for AVI file) (No, I didn't realize sound was being recorded... and yes, I realize this puts us in 'crazy dog people' territory)...
· Brilliant yet disturbing (December 2004 )
These drawings are both brilliant and disturbing. Michael Paulus has created skeletal systems for well-known cartoon characters. The attention to detail is astounding, but looking at the drawings is just a little creepy....
· Winter's back... ()
Winter, after a brief sojourn up north, has returned to Edmonton. On Friday, it got up to 10°C. On Saturday, it dropped, and snow started coming down... today, after two days of snow and dropping temperatures, it's -21°C. I'm looking forward to the trip down to BC more than ever now. :)...
· Roger Wilco (November 2004 )
I think I now have a goal for my two weeks Christmas vacation: play all the Space Quest games. Abandonia is a collection of "abandoned" DOS games that are freely downloadable... it looks like their collection is pretty complete, and they have some great classic games (like Quest for Glory, and even Adventure....
· The Life Aquatic (November 2004 )
I just discovered there's a new Wes Anderson movie coming out, The Life Aquatic. I must see this movie. That is all. (Wes Anderson is one of my favourite Hollywood directors/writers. He and Charlie Kaufman can do no wrong) Oh, and here are some clips...
· Things that suck. (November 2004 )
So. Very. Busy.
· Helpetica (November 2004 )
Kottke has a helper monkey.
· Our new catch phrase... (October 2004 )
Watching yet-another-stupid-reality show last night, Kirsten and I came across a phrase that we will, from now on, use as our battle cry: "I shaved my pits this morning... I didn't do that to lose." (Mondo-surprise points to anyone who can name the show.) Oh, and as an aside... what the hell has crawled onto Peter Mansbridge's face and died?...
· Yum! (October 2004 )
We made 5 pounds of fudge last night. It was really easy, and is so, so tasty. Update: Mmmmmmmmm... fudge....
· 10 inches (October 2004 )
10 inches of white stuff. Winter's here to stay.
· Things the dog does. (October 2004 )
In the spirit of this entry on dooce, here's a list of all the weird things our dog Cayce (incidentally, we're pretty close to just renaming her Case, since everyone calls her "Cay-See", even after we call her "Case") does: destroys sticks - We used to have a box of kindling downstairs, to use with our non-usable woodstove. Over the course of a couple of days, Cayce had chewed them all up, leaving little bits of stick and bark all over the basement floor dances - when we come home (after an hour, three hours, ten minutes), Cayce runs around the yard, grabs a stick/toy/pail, sits down in front of us, and does this hoppy thing with her front paws, which then turns into pawing in the air in our general direction. couch-hopping - Cayce is allowed to come up on the couch downstairs when we're sitting on it, but not the couch upstairs. So, she takes full advantage of the situation, and crawls up onto the couch any time we're there. It's generally starts with a little hop to get her two front paws on to one of us; then, she tentatively puts one of her back paws on the couch and boosts herself up. Usually, she crawls over top of Kirsten, and plunks her rear down on K's chest. Something to keep in mind here is that Cayce is 65 pounds. dreams - Cayce takes a lot of naps during the day, and if her behaviour is any indication, she does a lot of dreaming. Dreaming for Cayce starts with a little twitch of a paw, then grows to more twitches and more paws, and - if she's having a particularly good dream - her lips will start moving as if she's barking her little heart out. going to the crate - when Cayce is tired, she'll put herself to bed in her kennel. A couple of nights ago, Kirsten and I were downstairs watching TV. When it came time to go to bed, Cayce wandered right upstairs and straight to her kennel. It was heartbreaking to have to haul her outside for peeps, then put gunk in her ear (she has an ear infection). There's more, but I have a tonne of work to get back to. ;)...

· Joe Schmo 3... (September 2004 )
So they played a reality TV show prank on a witless bachelor... then, they played the same prank on a bachelor AND bacherlorette. What could they do next? Enter Invasion Iowa, supposedly a shoot for a new William Shatner movie. Instead, it was a new reality TV show produced by the same guy who brought us the Joe Schmo series, where they trick an entire town....

· Lawn darts! (June 2004 )
Weird craving.
· And in other news... (June 2004 )
I just picked this CD/MP3 player up for the car, to replace the stereo that was damaged when my car was broken into. It turned out that Certified Audio (where I got K's CD player, and had extremely good service) was having a MASSIVE SALE (so emphasized, because they had to rent out Edmonton SportEx center to hold it) last weekend. It was a fortunate coincidence that I'd just received the insurance cheque the Friday before. Kirsten and I wandered over to the North side after humming and hawing over whether we wanted to make the journey. I'm glad we did, because I wound up saving $130 on the deck. I likely wouldn't have spent that much to begin with, but since I had an insurance cheque and it was on sale, I decided what the heck. ;) Once the window is replaced tomorrow, I'm going to install that puppy in the car and burn a disc of MP3s to "test" it. :) Alan - since you've got an MP3 deck too - any suggestions for MP3 organizing software? (this disjointed entry brought to you by the Chemical Brothers and lack of sleep)...

Some true/false questions about water reflecting the current temperature in Edmonton. Let's see how many you folks get right: True or false: 1. Water melts at the same temperature it freezes. 2. Water is the only material that expands when it freezes 3. Ice can transition directly to a gaseous state. 4. Salt melts ice at any temperature. 5. Ice is less dense than water....

· Nifty! ()
In about 20 minutes, Kirsten will be flying to Baltimore from Toronto on one of these....
· Air Canada Sucks! (October 2003 )
Air Canada Sucks Kirsten just got off the phone with them... apparently they called to say that the were cancelling her flight to Baltimore (she's going to a conference) and rescheduling it... She wasn't allowed to know why it was cancelled, and no compensation was offered to her for the short notice... and, of course, the woman she was dealing with was a complete bag - saying, "I can cancel the flight entirely, if you'd like." And they wonder why people are fleeing them and going to Westjet. Update: There's apparently a "step by step" process to file a complaint with Air Canada. The steps? Deal with it your damned self. For customer service complaints, they only have a fax number. You can't actually talk directly to a person about your customer service complaints....

· These men have no girlfriends... (September 2003 )
LA Weekly: Features: Keepers of the Magic Kingdom tells the oddly compelling story of obsessive Disneyphiles - people who obsessively visit Disneyland several times a week, collect Disney memorablia (or, in one case 'ephemeral ephemera'). They know the Disney cast members, they notice if a new speaker is placed on a ride, or plants are placed around a fountain. They have memorized the entire history of every square foot of the park. Are these people mentally unhealthy, or do they just really like Disneyland? In one Disneyphile's case, a traumatic event is associated with Disneyland: his father had a heart attack there, within minutes of stepping into the park; he never got to see it as a child as a result. Another Disneyphile has seen almost every showing of "The Power of Blast", which opened in November of 2001 and performs four times a day. Sometimes she "takes off Tuesdays to run errands." Read the article, step into the world of the Disney obsessive, and decide for yourself....

Feeling pretty wonky right now... Keth and Dave - your questions are coming, but you probably won't get them until Monday. Update: Basically, all the stress and negative feelings I accrued working for the company I was talking about yesterday have invaded my body... my neck's near-seized, and I just feel icky. I'm looking forward to this weekend, because Kirsten and I are heading down to the mountains (there's ONE trail in the Kananaskis area that's open, and that's where we're heading. I've been pretty cranky all week, so I was raining on K's "Let's go Hiking!" parade yesterday... and now that I'm looking forward to getting into the wilderness, I feel like a heel for it, so I publicly apologize. :)...

· Ugh. (August 2003 )
Seriously. Who didn't see this coming? The US is in a bad way with regards to the situation in Iraq. What better timing for a great piece of anti-Iraq propaganda about their 'star soldier', Jessica Lynch? Yes, I'm sure that they'll protray the Iraqi doctor that helped her in a positive light, since it's told from his perspective... but just watch what they do with the initial 'battle' and subsequent dealings with Iraqi soldiers. The funniest thing about this, however, is that they've cast a Canadian actress to play Jessica Lynch....

· Hit the bigtime! (July 2003 )
I've been getting quite a few hits at the Comic Book Guy page today, and now I know why... I've hit the big time! A link to the Ask the Comic Book Guy script was posted in alt.religion.kibology, by N Gergen. Here's the bulk of the post: From: N. Gergen (gergen@armory.com) Subject: Comic Book Guy says: "Worst Government Ever!" Newsgroups: alt.religion.kibology Date: 2003-07-31 06:12:11 PST Ok, I lied. It's not the Comic Book Guy, but a Nobel laureate in Economics. Although I don't know what he does on the weekends. And just which gummint is teh WORST EVAR? Iraq? North Korea? Kirsten just got back from the vet's with Heidegger... apparently he's healing up just fine. But we did find out he has another condition we didn't know about: Obsessive Licking Disorder. I kid you not. The entire time Heidegger's been in his cone, he's been very steadfast about keeping it clean... he'd often sit there for minutes licking the inside of the cone. We just assumed that he was doing it because he couldn't groom anything else! ;)...

· Publish and perish (July 2003 )
Dissertation Could Be Security Threat (TechNews.com)Invariably, he said, they suggest his work be classified. "Classify my dissertation? Crap. Does this mean I have to redo my PhD?" he said. "They're worried about national security. I'm worried about getting my degree." For academics, there always has been the imperative to publish or perish. In Gorman's case, there's a new concern: publish and perish. It doesn't surprise me in the least that the subject of the article, Sean Gorman, would be more concerned about his degree than national security. Having seen first-hand the blood, sweat and tears that goes into getting your PhD through K's efforts, I can't imagine someone wanting to give up years of research, especially when the research is comprised of publicly available material. Gorman says he is facing a dilemma with his research between publishing as an expert in his field, and preserving national security. Since his research uses publicly available material, however, how much of a threat to security is it? Yes, it makes that information easier to access -- but the information is already out there. It opens interesting questions: should the government have the right to shut down research projects? If so, what are the criteria for shutting down a project, and who should wield the authority to do so?...

· Test your Canadiana quotient. (July 2003 )
The CBC is running a Canada Day 2003 Survey to test your Canadiana knowledge. There's a couple quizzes linked off the site... I did pretty well, scoring 100% on the Dominion Institute poll. :) Apparently, the rest of the country didn't do quite as well. Only 38% of young adults passed, according to the article. There's a strong sense among Canadians that Canadian history isn't all that interesting, or important. As a result, a lot of Canadians know very little about their own country. Having studied Canadian history, I know the above to not be true; Canadian history is quite rich, and full of interesting stories. Some of these are:The Underground Railroad The Avro Arrow William Lyon Mackenzie King, the Prime Minister responsible for unemployment insurance, family allowance, "conscription if necessary, but not necessarily conscription", and gaining political advice from his dog and deceased mother. the Métis, a group that is alternately glorified and villified by Canadian history, depending on the year....

Something to check out at home: Haystack Our research seeks to bring modern information management and retrieval technologies to the average computer user in order to make computers a more compelling place for users to interact with their information. Haystack looks into the use of artificial intelligence techniques for analyzing unstructured information and providing more accurate retrieval. We also deal with the modeling, management, and display of user data in more natural and useful ways.Update: I tried haystack last night, and the authors weren't lying about how slow it was... it took 20 minutes to load everything, and was glacially slow to use. As some of you may already know, the West Nile Virus is coming to Alberta. But no worries! Alberta has a West Nile plan in place. Instead of spraying for mosquitoes, they're embarking on a public education campaign about how to prevent yourself from getting West Nile. The basic message: "Don't get bit by mosquitoes." Wow! · Huzzah for the Internet! (April 2003 )
I love the Internet. About a week and a half ago, we lost the free cable we so enjoyed for the previous year and a half. Sure, we weren't paying for it (it was a great side-effect of the older cable internet network we were on... they couldn't filter out the full cable signal, so when you got a cablemodem connected, you also got full cable), but it was still a shock ot the system. Today, thanks to Foz, I stumbled across Torrents. Basically, Torrents is a way to grab the latest episodes of all your favourite shows, usinb BitTorrent. I think we'll be checking this out in much more detail when I get home tonight....

· From the makers of the least scariest movie on earth... ()
There's a new movie coming out, fear.com that I've resolved to Never See In A Million Years. Why, you may ask, would I make such a statement about a movie I've never actually seen? Here's why: 1. It's made by the same people who made House on Haunted Hill, a movie that scared me only by being so pathetically NOT scary. A movie who spawned such memorable lines as, "The house doesn't care what's fair, who lives or dies. Know why? Cause it's a fucking HOUSE!" 2. They didn't even bother to secure the domain 'fear.com'; the actual film website is www.feardotcom.com. Shouldn't that be reflected in the movie's title? For what it's worth, Fear.com (the real site, not the movie site) looks like a very interesting project: "Questioning the wisdom of FDR's statement daily..."...

It's just about time again for yet another Edmonton Fringe Festival. The list of players is already out, and I'm ecstatic to see that our favourite Shakespearian(ish) troup, Sound&Fury is back with a NEW production: "Canned Hamlet." A lot of the old stand-bys are there, such as Merrie Mary, Nikolai, Bikeboy and DIE NASTY (an ongoing parody of soap operas. Supposed to be extremely funny, but I've never seen it). There are some new kids on the block too, such as Pamila's Porn Story Hour, which beg to be checked out. And, I just discovered that the Group Formerly Known as Mind the Walrus Productions has regrouped to become Hidden Insanity Theatre. Mind the Walrus was our first direct exposure to the Fringe Festival. When K and I first moved up to Edmonton in August of 1999, we had to live in the University of Alberta dorms. (why is another story for another time. Basic reason: landlord wouldn't give us our apartment until Sept 1; we moved up for Aug 15, after he told us we could move in immediately). Mind the Walrus was also billeted at the University, in the same section of the dorm as we were in. As a result, K got to know several of the players quite well while I was working, and we went to catch their show. After that summer, they disbanded... I'm happy to see that some of them regrouped to form a new troup, and we'll have to see if we can catch one of their shows this year....

Saw Spiderman last night, and Sam Raimi just made Deity status, right alongside Peter Jackson for his efforts. Despite paying a record $27 for K and I to get in (she treated me to the movie, which is why I love her), we were not disappointed. Raimi did an outstanding job in directing and David Koepp did a great job with the screenplay. There were so many great moments in the film, but possibly the best were Raimi-isms that made it in (such as spoiler and spoiler). The casting was perfect as well... Toby McGuire made a great Peter Parker, and nobody but Willem DeFoe could have pulled off the Green Goblin. It was also great to see Raimi's trademarks showing up: Bruce Campbell, his brother Ted, and the old 1973 Delta '88. It's good to know that as long as Raimi's around, none of these will be without work....

This story annoys me. Two amateur treasure hunters came across an important archaeolgical find in the hills of Germany, a circular disc "depicting the heavens with sun, moon and stars . . . at least 3,600 years old." It was eventually sold for enough money to "buy a stereo and some beers," then hawked on the international antiquities black market. The context of this piece has been forever destroyed. We'll likely never know where it came from, or who the people who produced it were. It's a significant find, because it places astonomical knowledge far earlier in Europe than originally thought. Yet without the context, this knowledge is utterly useless....

I found this page by accident today... it's a historical list of BBS's in North America. Some of you may know that I used to run a BBS before I became the great Internet personality I am today. Dirk Gently's Holistic BBS / Holistic BBS / Fascination Street OIS used to be my home, from '92-'96 (they got the dates wrong in the list). I wasn't like the rest of the BBS's in town, which were all Online Games, large filebases and (more often than not) pirated commercial software. Fascination Street turned into something entirely different. Our downloads consisted (after time) mostly of text files, focussing on the occult and alternate religions. I spent a lot of time trying to create a place where people could talk freely and comfortably about their beliefs. One of the regulars, Larry Ingersoll (a pseudonym used by Samuel Wagar, someone who later went on to cause quite the scandal in BC politics) was a Wiccan high priest. He and I set up 'lessons' for the other board members, as a primer to Wicca. We had a small, but great bunch on that board -- I was very sad to shut it down when I moved in '96. Some of the members are still friends today -- most have faded away. If you were a member of Fascination Street, or Holistic BBS, drop me a note - I'd love to hear from you....

fixed bad linkBeoplayer - this is the MP3 player I've *always* wanted. It turns out Bang & Olufsen, creators of some damned fine audio equipment, have put out their own MP3 player. It's incredible. Not only does it stay visually OUT of the way when it's not being interacted with, but it is intuitive & easy to use when it IS visually prominent. Though its minimalistic design is very nice (would have been nicer if you could change its appearance/colors). But here's the killer feature: It organizes your MP3s in the following manner (with collapsable trees): Album/Artist/Genre/Playlist/Folder. No longer do I have to search through a long, long list of MP3s to find the right artist or album -- beoplayer makes it much, much faster to browse.About the only negative point against it is that it's a Windows-only application -- no Mac (which is surprising, given the partnering of B&O-heads and Mac-heads), no Linux. 'course, if the design catches on, it may only be a matter of time until Xmms/GQMpeg decide to add in elements of beoplayer....

i'm dead tired today. and i don't know why. i had a bundle of energy this morning, and stuck around the house to be with k (sure it made me late for work, but it was worth it).. but it seems the closer i got to work, the more tired i became. it could be because i was run off my feet yesterday. i've had to start getting things ready here at work for my big 2-week move to vancouver (vacationing only, don't worry)... it could also have something to do with the fact that i ran around after work shopping with k, after eating far too little dinner (just wasn't hungry. i'll know to eat anyways next time). i did have an entry for yesterday, by the way... i wasn't able to finish it on time, or post it for that matter. i'd planned on finishing it up last night, but k and i were out shopping far too late (but, on the bright side, we only have two people left to buy for. by the time we had got back and wrapped all our presents.. well, we were both too tired to do anything else. and today, i'm too tired to even sit upright. now, normally i sit at my desk at an angle - i hate sitting straight-on at a desk. but today, i'm slumped over, leaning *real* hard on one elbow, trying to maintain some semblance of uprightedness. and failing. oh... just as a note, my email address is going to be changing in january. mark down 'solas@ufies.org' as the new address. for now it'll forward through to my normal @direct.ca address, but that may change when i get the cablemodem in january. we're 100 percent, for sure leaving on sunday. if you're really lucky, and i have my computer set up by then (not likely), i'll do up a quick journal entry to let you all know k & i got to the valley in one piece. for sure i'll have one on monday. so. how tired are you?...
