Update on the tasklist...

<< A life you love | Main | The Life Aquatic >>

*phew* busy weekend.

Got a few things done this weekend, from the aforementioned task list:

Client A's site. The last thing to do here was add the ability to edit the list of members. You can see the site in its current state (not totally up to date, but the changes are things you will not get a chance to see unless you are an executive member of MEMI) here.

Put up storm windows on the upstairs windows. We(I)'ve been putting this one off for the last few weekends, but as it's been getting colder and colder, it's been unavoidable. There's two reasons I put this off: first, I had to replace the glass on two of the windows, because they actually *fell off* in the spring when we had a big windstorm. That, of course, entailed scraping out 40 years worth of hardened glazing putty, and setting in new panes of glass with new glazing putty. After having done this, I can - without a trace of doubt - say that it's worth paying $10 per pane to have someone else do it.

The other hardship on this task was that I had to run out to Home Depot to get a 24' extension ladder, and balance precariously on it to install the windows. The space we have at each side of the house is quite narrow - 3' on one side, and 4' on the other. Now consider that the ladder is extended to 24'. If you can do the basic geometry, you know that the ladder is pretty much vertical at this point. There was more than one instance of the ladder shifting just a little, and me praying that I didn't a) fall off, or b) drop the mallet and/or window on top of Kirsten, who was doing her best to hold the ladder steady.

Install wainscoting, paint, and closet organizer in bedroom closet. - We got the first part of this done yesterday... It seemed like a simple enough task - after all, it's a closet. However, some ugly problems reared their heads. First was an inconsistent angle on the 'roof' part of the closet. It turns out the angle changed somewhat from one side to the other. Second, it *also* turned out that the bottom of the closet from the back wall was an inch farther out of plumb than the top of the closet. An inch. This pretty much involved cutting the front of the wainscoting board at an angle, as well as the top. The two problems conspired to make some rather ugly seams that we're going to have to cover up with (big) moulding. In addition, it was pretty damned near impossible to find studs to nail some of the wainscoting to. The standard 16" rule didn't work, because in some places the studs were just missing.

When we finally got everything in, we decided to call it a night. We have yet to paint it, or install the closet organizer -- activities to do this weekend. At the moment, however, Kirsten's pretty convinced that it looks like a chicken coop. We can't look at it without singing the opening of Duelling Banjos. Hopefully, a nice coat of Behr's "Chocolate Froth" (the colour in our other closet and upstairs hallway) will mitigate that a bit. :)

In not-so-great news, it looks like my Linux development box is randomly powering down. I don't know if this is a power supply issue, a linux issue or what... I expect a pretty boring night of peering through system logs trying to figure it out. Hopefully I can get it to stay up long enough to figure out what the problem is. Whatever the problem, it needs to be fixed - I need the damned thing running to get most of my work done!
