I was riding home from my dentist appointment on Friday.
Weird related incident #1:
As I was riding through the downtown core, I stopped along with another cyclist at a light. As it turned green, a police car flashes its siren, comes around the corner, and tells my signal-awaiting companion to "STAY ON THE SIDEWALK!". As I bike away, I hear the detained cyclist murmer a little SHIT.
Weird related incident #2:
Now, on my way home, I often ride on the sidewalk, since a) it's safer than driving with the somewhat insane and unbikefriendly Edmonton drivers, and b) I ride southbound on the east side of the street , since that's the side I live on (and would be riding in oncoming traffic were I to ride on the street).
This particular time, however, I ran into a little bout of weirdness.
As I was riding along the sidewalk, I spotted two elderly pedestrians: an elderly woman heading the same direction as me, and an elderly man coming towards me. As I started to move on to the grass to give the elderly woman lots of space as I passed, the elderly man started also moving onto the grass, and started pointing his cane at me.
"Are you a troublemaker?", he asked.
I moved further onto the grass, hoping to pass. He followed me, stabbing at the air with his cane.
"I said, are you a troublemaker?"
"Uhm...... no." I stopped, to avoid hitting him.
"Well, you must be - you're riding a bicycle on the sidewalk."
*cane shake*
"That's against the law!"
*cane shake*
" If anything happens you're liable!"
"Uhm... thanks for letting me know." I said, as I quickly scooted around him.
I kept riding on the sidewalk, all the way home.

From what I've seen of drivers I'd rather take the fine for riding on the sidewalk than getting run over by some nut on the road. In town anyway, out of town the roads are pretty good and wide... (sometimes).

And whole-heartedly anti-bicycle, they're probably all against solar power too.
Downtown is murderous on a bike if you don't ride on teh sidewalk
