A Quick Vote

Quick vote:

I'm contemplating pitching a "PHP for Webheads" book along the same lines as the Apache book I'm working on right now -- it'd take fledgling web designers through the basics of programming, and run them through a few example projects. I'd see the book as half theory, half practical development.

If you saw a book like this in the bookstore... would you buy it? Is it something the average web designer would be interested in reading?

(And yes Dana - I'd discuss developing PHP securely. :) )

  1. I'd take a poll of the number of books available on the subject first. There aren't nearly as many apache books as there are html books at chapters. What's the number of php books?

Personally after seeing about 10 different books on a subject my eyes blur and I ignore it completly, unless it's an ORA title, because then I *know* the quality. The html in 24 hours, html in 21 days, html for dummies, etc etc etc just blur.

  2. Isn't "PHP securely" an oxymoron like "military intelligence", "jumbo shrimp", "Microsoft Works" and "NT Security"?

Seriously though, I'm with Alan on this. I'd do a bit of polling on whats out there already. Normally I will head over to the OR&A section to check something out like this, and I know they have a couple of titles already on this. Doesn't me there isn't a need though... just means OR&A has filled their bookshelf.

If you do decide to write it, fire me the chapter on PHP security. Would love to read your take on it.

  3. I bought a PHP book this weekend. You are losing your target market to competitors!

  5. Given the glut of tech books on it's own a PHP for Webheads would get lost on the shelves. If you developed a reputation for being the PHP guy for the rest of us then had a book to accompany the reputation it might stand a chance.
