So, as you can tell, I'm back online now - though not fully. Until we get the basement sorted out (read: less full of junk, sawdust and contractors), we only have Kirsten's laptop hooked up to the 'net on a little table in the upstairs spare bedroom. It's actually kind of nice having this small station here, with the cablemodem flashing merrily beside me, and a lamp on the left lighting up the birch tree outside.

I was rudely introduced to the filth that is cablemodem traffic this afternoon. I'd hooked Kirsten's laptop up to the 'net, then ran downstairs for 5 minutes to talk to her. When I got back, Norton Antivirus had a HUGE message up about a virus found on the system, which it stalled to awaite my decision on what to do.

It turns out the laptop was the victim of the OPAServ worm. 5 minutes. I'm pretty sure I'm clean now, but I have Process Explorer and TCPView running, just in case.

When I first hooked it up, I did so without thinking; it's normally nicely firewalled away from potential problems. As a result, I didn't even think of putting a firewall on this thing. There's one now: Sygate.

Ugh. Another thing on top of an already full pile.

My sister-in-law connected to Telus DSL not long ago, within about 15 minutes she had a wide variety of worms and stuff. Very nasty, she took the computer back to Futureshop to get it sanitized.

But Microsoft has security as their #1 concern!

*cough*

Based on Darren and Dana's experiences hooking windows systems up to the net, that simply re-enforces my resolve to never hook a windows box directly to the Internet without a firewall of some sort. Gads.

BTW, D, I'm hoping that you have K's box updated and patched (there were a few new ones in the last week or so) right? :)

Of course not... you think I've had time to even LOOK at the computer over the past month?! :)

However, things will be looked at quite soon, now that we have a moment to breathe (a little).

Hey neat, two more WindowsUpdate updates today! Go MS!

It makes me feel all snuggly that they're looking out for me. Just like an uncle who has a stack of STAG magazines beside his bed, a generic beer in hand and a comedic t-shirt that says "Ben Dover".
