Chapters re-hires 'costly' employee

I can't believe I missed this one.

Stephen Whiteside, a Down-syndrome man in Calgary, was fired from his 12 hour a week job at Chapters, stacking books.

In a letter to the man's mother, Chapters cited budget constraints as the reason for his firing. His wage? 3 dollars an hour. Another disabled man was also fired from the same location.

To Chapters' credit, both men have now been rehired, and brought up to minimum wage.

But in the end, what a horrible news item to read. Not only does Chapters exploit disabled employees by paying them far below minimum wage, but those same employees are seen as easy targets when 'budget constraints' emerge. How many other disabled employees has Chapters let go in the same fashion? How many are still working for $3 an hour?
