what if...

<< nifty! | Main | it's fall... >>

I was thinking this morning, about the Earth's Magnetic Field, and how the magnetic poles reverse themselves every 200,000 years or so.

And I wondered, what happens the next time the poles reverse? The magnetic field is overdue, according to the above linked article, so it really could happen at any time... but what happens to our technology if the earth's magnetic field reverses itself?

It's a crazy question for a Tuesday morning, I know... but something that struck me as something I'd never thought about before.

I read that it would only take the poles one year to completely change places.

I think that at about the 6 month mark, some of us would be doing some heavy swimming. Might be time to buy a canoe.

I just now read that... coal beds and plant fossils have been found in Antarctica, clearly indicating that the Antarctic was not always covered with ice... Polar shift indeed. I hope it lands on Hawaii next time.

We will all die when the poles reverse. No, I am just joking!
