I hate SQL

<< so much for academic freedom... | Main | further proof... >>

title says it all.... it seems that if it's not an alphanumeric character, SQL barfs on it. If you manage to save it as a hexidecimal value, you then need to convert it BACK when you pull it OUT of the database.

How can you tell I just spent the last 2 hours trying to get the database to store a double-quote?

Ah... but as I've mentioned before with this project, things would be soooo much easier if I could use the built-in PHP functions, rather than a proprietary interface... ;)

Funny... my problem with SQL was getting it to *strip* extra double-quotes. it was sticking extra ones in all over the place. Took us a few days to get rid of them all. Grr. :)

SQL as in SQL the language? quote handling can differ between databases... I can't remember having hastles with Oracle/Postgres/Mysql/MSSQL though. Or maybe I did a quick =~ s/"/\"/ or something. PHP is silly :-)

Scrap the PHP shit and drop the crapy MSSQL, then replace with Perl, DBI and Postgres. And if the copany needs some help with the switch I'm avialbe as a consulant, resonable rates :)

Sadly, the established criteria for this project was interoperation with Interbase and a proprietary interfact with it at that.
