the bastards!

<< better than valium! | Main | From our friends at screaming midget... >>

There's a lot of domain hijacking going on these days... the most recent of which happened to our dear friend Julie...

If you're receiving this mail, it's because you either do link to
digitalurbanite.com or Google says you did. :)

In case you're unaware of the situation regarding my domain and my blog,
here's what's going on.

My domain expired in late May, and a last-minute domain transfer attempt
failed. My domain was placed on administrative hold. My options were to pay
$35 US to re-register it with a registrar I wanted to leave, or to pay $70
US to administrate it myself. Or, thought I, just let it expire entirely
and then reregister it from my new registrar.

Don't. Ever. Do. This.

A cybersquatter who's on one of those "expiring domains" mailing lists

snagged my domain in the 12 hours it expired, while I was asleep and then
travelling to work this morning.

He is refusing to even sell me my domain back.

So, I'm registering digitalurbanite.NET.

The domain will be live in the next couple of days and I ask you to please,
please change your link from .com to .net as soon as you can. The Google
Spider will be going through sites shortly and we should be able to get him
pretty much out of the listings if you make the change quickly enough. :)

Thanks for your co-operation, and I'm sorry for the intrusion into your inbox.

Sincerely,

Julie :)

Those BASTARDS! Man, the world really pisses me off now and then :( Julie, that totally sux0rs and if I was a 31337 hax0r I'd get one back for the good guys for you.

Are they asking a lot of money or just refusing to sell? Because you're the previous owner, or because they aren't going to sell it period?

While yeah, it sucks, I know it all could have been avoided if I had simply started the process a week beforehand. That's what really pisses me off.

But to answer your question, ArcBaby, the guy wrote back to me (after I wrote and inquired about how to get it back) and said "unless you have a VERY lucrative offer, we're not interested in selling".

So I called the guy a cybersquatter and he got all pissy at me and now won't return any emails.

It's not worth the headache (or money) to try and reason with him. I doubt he'll pony up for it next year, so I figure I'll grab it back then, if I still want it. ;)

And, uh, Darren? Your blog still links to .com. ;)

Thanks for the sympathy, all. :)
