Excerpt from the "greatest hits'
welcome to the new journal...
i'm playing around today, instead of *actually* getting work done. nifty, eh?
you'll notice a few changes... first off, i'm switching to a daily format. no more of this downloading 80k of text bullshit.
i'm playing around with a lot of things in the new journal too. arcterex was kind enough to set up ssi for me, so i'm toying with that. i'm also starting to get more into the css/html 4.0 thing... we'll see how that goes. i'm essentially trying to get myself back to the web-savvy level i used to be at. i've lost some of that skill since moving to adobe's indesign a few months back to do some print work for the company i'm working for. i've done scant little web work since i started here, with the exception of some minor additions/fixes on some of the main webpages. it seems i'm taking more of a creative design role than a webmaster role here -- which is just fine with me, as i'm starting to enjoy it much more... and what i've put out so far has been gobbled up by the bosses...
for example.. i'm currently working on a postcard-style mailer for my company... i can't show it here 'cos of nda and all, but here's a good description:
you get your mail, and you notice a slightly different piece of junk mail in there. it's about the size of a regular postcard, 4" by 6", and you see that, underneath the company name and introductory blurb, there's a blue-toned picture of part of a highway.. you open it up to the first fold, and you see the other side of the highway... and a quote from one of our customers: "This kind of intelligence makes it easy." inside all of this, we have a brief description of all our services and products. on the back of the postcard, it's blank text-wise (this is where a mailing label will go), with a picture of a guy on a motorcycle rushing off into the distance. incidentally, there's enough room between the top of the guy's head, and the top of the postcard to fit a mailing label perfectly.
it's kinda cool - the description really doesn't do it justice, so i'll release a copy of it once it goes public... so keep an eye open. i also am in the process of finishing a large project for another company. again tho', i'm under nda so i can't release any pics of it... yet. ;)
you're probably wondering about the "journal of a lifer" thing.
well.
um.
the way i look at it, i'm going to be in the field of design for a long time. i don't plan on making a career switch anytime soon, and i really feel like i'm starting to hone my skills a little more, especially in the world of print. i think it took a move away from my homeland to do it - i couldn't get serious about it until i was in a totally new land. literally.
so that's it for this entry.
talk to you tomorrow.
